Amonia smelling eggs

by: Anonymous

I just hard boiled some eggs and when I went to eat them, they smelled strongly of ammonia. I was very concerned - so I googled it and came up with your postings. Should I throw out these eggs? I believe they were free range.

I wanted to add: The raw egg has no smell. It is the hard boiled whites that smell like ammonia.

Ammonia in eggs

I boiled eggs and colored them for Easter. They tasted normal when eaten immediately, but then the following day they reek of ammonia and taste funny. They did not make me sick, but are they safe to eat on a cellular level?

Ammonia smellling eggs
by: Anonymous

I too have encountered this several times with fresh eggs that I have bought and also with my own from hens I raised. I do not know what causes it but would love to learn. The last time I ran into it, I was given some fresh eggs from free range hens. Not only did the shell smell like ammonia but so did the content. However, oddly enough, they tasted fine. Hope someone who knows what causes this will post.

I just experienced the same thing with 6 doz eggs. ( all peeled now) OMG, did you ever get a response? I guess for me not knowing, I revert to my Grandmothers saying, when in doubt, throw them out... Unless someone has an answer for me.

My mom has chickens we always get fresh eggs from her she collects them every morning and refrigerates them, I was making eggs today and the one I cracked open looked weird so I smelled the inside of the egg shell and it was so strong it burned my sinuses like a smell of ammonia and burnt rubber, its stuck in my nose now, any reason for this?
