Do chickens get to know people?

Question
We just got 4 baby chickens we want to raise them for eggs. We were told to hold them a lot so they get comfortable with us. Do chickens get to know people? Will they come up to you like a dog?

Answer
The answer is yes and no. Some breeds are more friendly than others. It also depends on how much time you can spend with them, but this still will not guarantee there will be a bond.

I have seen many situations where chickens come to you and want to be with you just like a dog or cat. So to answer your question, it does not hurt to try, you may be surprised with a new best friend

Know chickens

by: Turner chick Mom

Know chickens: I had 6 chicks i got at a week old. I held them every day as we had them inside until they got their feathers in. I talked to them all the time. By the time we had them outside ( at about 12 weeks old) all i had to do was call them and they would come running from where ever them were and stand at my feet. They would follow me around the yard and sit in my lap when i read outside. My daughter could even snuggle with them and shes 18 months old so yes, they very much can get to know their people, as long as you spend the time with them to get to know you!
