I did it

by: Pavel

I did it, Yeah! That's exactly what I did. At 4 AM, I went out with 20 incubated chicks, I took the hen off of her nest for feeding-just as we did through all her sitting time.

I just put all the chicks in her nest, placed the hen back on her nest. In that moment I turned off the flashlight, so everything went dark again.

A little residual light from my back yard allowed me to see what she was doing- looked as though she did not observed the change, set down and all went silent.

Put the cover back and checked after one hour and everything was still OK.

Around 9AM, I picked up the whole nesting box (I used two plastic crates 16" x 16" with cardboard in the bottom to keep the hay in) and took it to my garage, where the heat light was prepared in a box, placed the whole nesting plastic crate inside and turned it side ways to allow the chicks to come out and that's all. Now she has 36 chicks.

I feel that I was able to twist the rules a little bit. Other factors concurred like: The hen was calm, we saw that during her sitting, the chicks were one day hatched (I started the incubator and the hen on same day) all action took place at very early AM and I'm sure there are more factors which I haven't recognized, but all together it worked out for me.
Thanks for posting!!!

Chicks adopted

by: Sharon

Chicks adopted: I'm very glad it worked. I so much prefer raising chicks with a good hen to keep them warm and teach them the ways of the world. All the best to you and this new flock!

hen has hatched one chick...can we add more?
by: Anonymous

Hello
We have a lovely peckin bantam hen who sat 5 eggs but only one has hatched today. The others are no good.I know of somewhere I could buy hatched chicks but they will not be ready till the weekend..5 days away.

Does any one think it would be ok to sneek a few extra under her at the weekend or is a five day difference in age too much?
Thanks for any comments.
