Rescue Hen with Strange Ailment

by Trevor Perriam
(UK)

Question:
Rescue Hen with Strange Ailment: I am new to hens and have one hen from a batch obtained in the last 3 weeks that has an unusual ailment.

She is fit and well in all other aspects. She eats well and she lays most days, however she constantly stretches her neck, opens her beak, and makes a "gasping sound."

Although it would appear that she is actually exhaling, almost as we would do to clear our throat.

Has anyone any ideas what this may be please.

Answer:
This is a tough one that doesn't have an easy explanation. Perhaps she is getting a bit of a clogged craw, like something is stuck in our throat.

You should add a little grit to her food to see if this helps clear that up. It also could be the onset of something more serious like bronchitis.

Watch the bird closely and look for the onset of other symptoms. It could also just be a nervous habit. Birds like people have weird perks and some are a little quirky.

strange ailment

i fully agree with the answer given but i also have a small suggestion.

Since chickens will eat anything it is possible (as the answer said) that she has something stuck in her throat.

Try giving her some small pieces (dime size) of the center of a slice of bread. it will stick to whatever is stuck and take it on down to the craw. it may be no more than a small piece of dried vegetation. good luck.

Gape worm
by: Anonymous

It could also mean your chook has gape worm. You will find a wormer at your pet store.

A good general purpose wormer and external parasite application is ivomec pour-on for sheep (1 drop on the back of the neck and 1 drop orally - this is used by pet stores even though it has not been registered for avian treatment).

I just use 2 drops on the back of the neck as it's supposed to be applied this way for internal and external parasites. My chooks generally weigh 1.5kg each.
