WHAT WOULD MAKE CHICK SUDDENLY LETHARGIC?

by Hayley
(Australia )

He have 5 road island red chicks hatched in an incubator. When the chicks were put to bed last night they all seemed happy and healthy.

This morning one is extremely lethargic. Barely moving and won't eat or drink. They are still inside in their brood box although the weather is fine and go out for runs in the yard each day.
Please help they are much loved pets

I'm so sorry. I couldn't begin to guess what happened. All I can recommend is that you treat the symptoms you can see and keep this chick warm.

If a chick is not eating an drinking that is serious, as I'm sure you know. Possibly offer some drops of sugar water with a tiny bit of salt to see if it will perk up - or use something like Gatorade or a vitamin electrolyte supplement for chickens.

Check the crop for any signs of it being full but not emptying. If there is anything in the crop, it should feel soft and mushy. Lack of drinking can make crop contents solid and impossible to digest.

I hope the chick is OK.
