SWOLLEN EYE, WHITE STUFF BEHIND EAR

by Alex

Today we noticed that one of our hens has a swollen eye (shut) but the lens is clear and white stuff growing on the flaps behind her ears. Is this a fungus and could it make her eye swell shut?

EYS & EARS

We know from human doctors that eyes, ears, nose and throat can be affected by respiratory problems.

Not knowing what is going on, I would suggest isolating her, giving vitamins/electrolytes and good feed with clean water, where she has access to sunlight part of the day. Rest and these things can help boost the immune system without medications, but not knowing her general condition, age and what this is, I couldn't say if things will improve or not.

This could be an isolated problem with just her or something that might spread.

Only testing could tell you if this is a fungal infection. It could be some kind of respiratory infection causing irritation and swelling in the ear and eye area.

Short of taking her to a vet, which would be best for diagnosing this, ruling different things out by observation of her and the rest of the flock, might lead you to the right treatment and care of this hen, and possibly others in your flock.

I've never had this happen with my chickens, so can't give you specific advice beyond what has been said above.
